Reid Fruits today has called for 100s of new pickers in its Huon Valley and Derwent Valley cherry orchards – with the promise that there are thousands of dollars to be earned.

Reid Fruits Managing Director Tim Reid has told Dave the extra jobs are required to pick cherries for the interstate and international export markets.

“We have an immediate need for 50 jobs in the Huonville packing house and up to 100 pickers in the Huon Valley orchards”. Mr Reid said.

“We also need another 100-150 people in our Derwent Valley orchard. Picking jobs on these orchards will last for approximately 3 weeks, after which pickers will also have the opportunity to transfer from those two orchards to our late harvest orchard at Jericho in the Southern Midlands.

“Jobs at the late harvest orchard will continue until mid-February.”

Mr Reid said despite occasional negative reports about farm workers earnings nationally, Reid Fruits best pickers are earning up to $3000 for a 6-day week.

“You don’t have to work flat out, just consistently. It’s a great working environment, you are outside in the fresh air, the trees are not very high and the fruit is large and firm.”

Mr Reid said the orchards already have some 140 pickers through the Pacific Island Program, mainly from Vanuatu.

“We also have a great team of local pickers, including from Tasmania’s migrant population, mainly from Bhutanese, Nepalese and African communities. The packing shed at Huonville is very popular with University students.”

Mr Reid said people who have permanent jobs through the week are also welcome to sign on and work weekends.
