Dave chats with Kidney Health Week  Ambassador Tom Lonergan

Tom is a former AFL footballer who played 209 games for the Geelong Cats,
including the 2011 AFL Premiership, and was named an All-Australian in 2012 and
2014.
In 2006, Tom was just 22 years old and playing in only his 7th AFL match when he
courageously backed into a pack of players at Geelong’s home ground of Kardinia
Park. A collision with Melbourne player Brad Miller forced Tom from the field, and
after coughing up “black vomit”, team doctors quickly called an ambulance to take
Tom to hospital where he was forced to undergo emergency surgery to save his life.
During this surgery, Tom was administered 45 units of blood (twice his blood supply)
and ultimately had his right kidney removed and spent four days in a coma.
