Indigenous Artist Mitch Tambo Celebrates Women on New Single ‘Dreamtime Princess’

Ever since reaching the final of Australia’s Got Talent in 2019, singer and songwriter Mitch Tambo has been on the rise.

The last few years have been quite busy for Mitch, having begun 2020 performing on stage at Fire Fight Australia alongside the likes of John Farnham and Olivia Newton John; and more recently marrying partner Lea, and becoming step-dad to her three children. Mitch has still found time to release an upbeat new single, Dreamtime Princess.

“It’s a song that is a song of celebration – me just wanting to celebrate and honour and uplift all of the beautiful women around me,” Mitch said.

“Hopefully that celebration ripples out to all communities. Through the journey of the song, I had a real awakening where I had some real conversations around domestic violence. I discovered that our (Indigenous) women are 35-80 times, dependent on location, more likely to be hospitalised due to domestic violence than any other women.

“Through that discovery, I remember feeling so incredibly sad. To me, there’s nothing more royal than that… to be part of the oldest continual culture on the planet. We’re only here because of our beautiful matriarchs.”

Dreamtime Princess, which features Mitch singing in his native Gamilaraay language, is an upbeat celebration of women, and Mitch said there are plenty who have played a role in his life.

“I grew up from a single mum, my Nan. And my wife – she’s a strong, resilient woman. They’re full of strength, resilience… It’s a beautiful thing to put a song out that is me acknowledging and celebrating that,” he said.
