Hobart’s young talent is ready to hit the stage after almost 12 months in Heathers The Musical: High School Edition!

Dave talks with React Drama School Teacher and Tasmania Theatre Company Stage Manager Ellen Roe who is directing the show.

Now in its 17th year, the Old Nick Company Hobart Theatre Summer School in conjunction with Origin Theatrical presents the hit show HEATHERS THE MUSICAL: HIGH SCHOOL EDITION.

The show with book, music and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe is based on the film written by Daniel Waters.

Based on the cult classic film of the same name, HEATHERS is the story of Veronica Sawyer, a senior at the fictional Westerberg High. Veronica longs to be cool like the clique of it-girls that runs Westerberg: the unaffected, unattainable Heathers.

Unfortunately, in addition to awesome levels of popularity, the Heathers are also cruel, choosing to mock and bully their kingdom into submission. When Veronica uses her skills as a forger to get the Heathers out of detention, she impresses their leader Heather Chandler— so much so that they agree to let her into their exclusive club. At first Veronica is thrilled—until she finds out that being one of the Heathers means bullying the same kids she used to call friends. Meanwhile, Veronica finds herself attracted to a mysterious newcomer at school named Jason Dean (JD). When an innocent drink mix-up results in the accidental poisoning of Heather Chandler, JD convinces Veronica to stage Heather’s suicide. The results are so successful that Veronica and JD, exhilarated with their newfound power, resolve to rid Westerberg of the cruelly popular elite forever.

With raw, edgy, and culturally relevant numbers like “Beautiful,” “Candy Store,” and “Yo Girl,” Heathers is a fan favourite.

The Hobart Theatre Summer School’s annual musical productions are legendary, and this year promises not to disappoint once again.

There has been a long history of high standard of theatre productions presented around Hobart by schools and colleges. Then 17 years ago, the idea to put on a combined production with students from as many institutions as possible was raised… leading to the beginning of the Hobart Theatre Summer School.

In 2021, Heathers showcases many of Hobart’s up and coming young talent between the ages of 15-19, representing thirteen educational institutions including public, catholic and independent, and almost every Hobart suburb.

The show is directed by React Drama School Teacher and Tasmania Theatre Company Stage Manager Ellen Roe , with the musical direction in the hands of Grace Ovens and Choreography by Helen Kershaw. This show promises an entertaining night out at the theatre with something for everyone young and old.

“Every summer we are amazed by the talent and enthusiasm of the next generation of performers, and marvel at the combined efforts and outcome of the cast and crew with what they can achieve when we commence rehearsals in December and present a full production in early February,” said Production Manager Mark Holmes.

“The production team and I feel honoured to be given the opportunity to help develop many of Hobarts young and super talented musical theatre students. We look forward to being back onstage after a tough year for our industry and sharing this show with our audiences throughout the season.” Holmes said.
