Dave chats wwith Medical Commentator Dr Zac Turner who is calling on the Australian government to ban junk food advertisements before 9pm.
This push follows British PM Boris Johnson’s new anti-obesity campaign, “Better Health”, that includes the same junk food advertising ban, as he blamed his near death experience with COVID-19 due to his weight.
“Boris Johnson from day one has been cavalier about COVID. Until he caught it and now it has become serious for him. His doctor’s blamed his serious affliction from the virus as a result of his weight. His campaign is a watershed moment for the British Health System that for the last decade has struggled with obesity related illness.” Said Dr Zac Turner.
“The federal government should take action against obesity, especially since studies have shown that obesity increases the likelihood of death from COVID-19 by 40 percent.
“By not allowing junk food advertisements on the television before 9pm, people will no longer be constantly targeted throughout the day to make bad diet choices. Most importantly children are usually in bed by that point, who are the worst affected by junk food advertisements that tend to be targeted to a younger demographic. Obesity has been swept under the rug this year, with everyone staying indoors – eating more and exercising less. Our diets are becoming an avenue of comfort for us and so everyone is packing on the ‘iso-kilo’s as a result. Boris Johnson’s near-death revelation that his obesity directly affected his body’s response to COVID-19 will resonate with many other obese people.”
