| Children’s Music . . . with a Twist! | ||||
Letting your children listen to a Johnny Burns CD can have some unexpected results, according to Scottie Haas. “The children listen to Johnny Burns music and all of a sudden they are quoting scripture at you!” Scott enthused as he introduced Johnny who is one of the latest flavours in Christian kids’ music coming out of Sydney. In fact, Johnny himself is an unexpected sort of children’s entertainer. Not content to stick with his day job as a child psychologist, his enthusiasm for communicating with children is such that he likes to hang out with them in his spare time as well! Having been in bands since he was 15 years old, Burns was used to playing in front of crowds, but he never dreamt he’d be a children’s entertainer. He wrote his first children’s song as a reluctant favour for a local Carols by Candlelight being planned by his church. The resulting Christmas song was the first in a run of kids songs that took even him by surprise. “It wasn’t my thing,” he says. “I was a rock musician! But over the next few weeks God laid 10-12 songs for kids on my heart – and I am not usually that prolific a song writer.” The sudden turn to being a kids’ rocker ended up being a surprising natural progression. On his website Johnny Burns writes, “I suspect that I was always destined to end up writing Christian music for kids, although never quite realised that was the path I was on – until I started doing it.” Now with four CDs under his belt, Johnny is well and truly living his unexpected life. Released on July 2, Let Your Light Shine is his most recent production with the same bright and bouncy feel and regular injections of scripture which made his previous CDs so popular with children and adults alike. John told Scott, “The whole plan with my new CD was to take the scriptures that have shaped who I am as a Christian and make them available to kids, neatly wrapped up in some rhythm and some melody.” Making the music accessible to children is a high priority for Johnny and as a father of three, he is very conscious of another large responsibility to his young listeners. It is evident he has carefully thought about the important values he wants his own children to learn. “I just hope it’s going to be a blessing to kids and to parents who want their kids to grow up listening to scripture, and from that very early age, knowing God’s promises and the wisdom of the Bible.” A very unexpected aspiration for a children’s entertainer.
